The limerick forestry rally was a new edition to this years championship stepping in to fill the void of the Mayo rally which failed to run this year. With green and slippery stages that had not seen action in 15 years it would be a stern test of man and machine coupled with the fact that there had been torrential rain over night which left the stages treacherous at best in places. Going south to try and take championship standings were a number of Cavan crews with Mickey Conlon and Ciaran Mc Phillips leading the way in the MC Blinds mk2 escort into the ice like conditions. Unfortunately they’re run wasn’t to last when they slipped off the road and into retirement on the opening stage highlighting the dangers for the following crews as to the conditions on the stages. To the fore came John Gordon who had Thomas Wedlock on the notes as they were getting to grips with their new engine as they chased down Shane Mc Girr for full 2wd points to try and win the national title. They started the day well with fastest time over the opening stage and 4th overall but as the conditions worsened they took the more cautious approach when they learned of Conlon’s misfortune. 2nd two wheel drive and 6th overall would be their just reward for a tough day in the woods and with that a good haul of points to bring to Antrim for the final round of the year. Also in the hunt for championship glory would be the Ballyconnell crew of Colm Kearns and Terrence Mc Cabe as they would battle it out against the Crosserlough pairing of Gerry Hyland and Niall Mc Gaughern with the winner taking the navigators championship in class 9. From the word go it would be a big push from Kearns and Mc Cabe as they would look to put breathing space between themselves and Hyland should they have a problem. In the finish they could relax and enjoy their day as they would come home the class 9 winners with Terry winning the Class navigators championship with Niall Mc Gaughern finishing second on the day and in the championship alongside Gerry Hyland.
Also a class win on the day for the Subaru Impreza of Brecon Mc Breen and Breen Mc Namee as they would see off the Escort Cosworth of Pauric Sheridan and Sean Brunton in the battle of the 4wd classics.
